True to its name, it is a tool for writers who want little else but to focus on writing. If it was not free, I don't think it'd be worth very much money, but I like using it because it's charmingly archaic. What that means is when you download, you will be asked how much you think it’s worth to you, from 0.00 to 20.00, and you can pay the amount you think is right. Even though I no longer have any of the bells and whistles, it's not any more difficult to write. Despite the fact that Scrivener has *every* bell and whistle you can imagine, I have found over the past week that I am equally as productive in Jdarkroom. Ultimately, though, it was not able to come with me with my transition to Linux. Scrivener is worth the money and I found it quite helpful for storing my notes. I used Focuswriterfor a couple of years, but never loved it. Typewriter alternatives are mainly Word Processors but may also be Text Editors or Note-taking Tools. Like Q10, it offers daily goals, timers, and alarms, and like WriteRoom it can. Other great apps like Typewriter are WriteMonkey, Q10, Byword and Dark Room. Similar to WriteRoom and Q10, FocusWriter combines some of the elements of both.

Also, checking my statistics, project targets, all that jazz. The best alternative is FocusWriter, which is both free and Open Source. What I don't like about focuswriter is that I find myself getting distracted with customizing the theme - it's so obscenely customizable that the customization itself breaks my "focus" in "focus-writer". It's a lot like Gottcode's Focuswroter, which is a lot more popular. You can use hotkeys to change the color of the software, open a file, create new, save as, etc, but that's it. Visually, it has zero bells, zero whistles, zero anything. The appeal of JDarkroom is that it lacks features. Ive been using FocusWriter for my last few projects and I really like it. It can be run with the Java SDK by executing it as a jar file (or you can set it to executable and theoretically your system should just run it.) JDarkroom is a text editor written in Java.
